Man City show power of the collective with Champions League win over star-studded PSG

Amid all the geopolitical dimensions of this game in Manchester, and the great stars on show, it may go some way to setting up one of football’s little quirks.

What price Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain meeting an interim’s Manchester United in the Champions League last 16? That is at least the prospect that the Argentine’s latest trip to the city sets up, after a result that is almost certain to leave the French side second in the group.

Manchester City meanwhile again look like potential champions, after a commanding 2-1 victory.

Manchester City come from behind to beat PSG and reach last 16

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus struck as Manchester City came from behind to sink Paris St Germain 2-1 and reach the Champions League last 16.

The Premier League champions produced a superb response after falling behind to a goal from Kylian Mbappe against the run of play early in the second half at the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling levelled just after the hour and substitute Jesus popped up to claim a winner 14 minutes from time that also confirmed City as winners of Group A.

Reaction from Marquinhos

Paris Saint-Germain’s captain Marquinhos spoke after their defeat to Manchester City and emphasised that qualification to the next round was more important than winning the game. He said:

“The most important thing is to qualify. Sometimes you finish top and you play a really strong club. Sometimes you finish second and you end up with a better draw.”

Man City vs PSG player ratings: Bernardo Silva stars in Champions League victory

Manchester City hit back in the final half an hour to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 and seal top spot in Group A of the Champions League.

Goals by Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus were no more than City deserved after dominating for much of the game without reward, denied time after time by PSG’s last-ditch defending.

Kylian Mbappe’s goal on the break gave PSG the lead early in the second half, but they could not hold on.

Here’s how every player rated:
